Why I Chose St. Thomas

After completing his undergraduate degree in computer science, MS in AI graduate student Arthur Kennedy saw firsthand how rapidly artificial intelligence was transforming every area of the field, from software development to web applications and data systems.

"I chose the M.S. in Artificial Intelligence at the University of St. Thomas to deepen my technical expertise and stay ahead of that shift. The program has strengthened my ability to work with proprietary datasets, train, and fine tune models, and build solutions that can outperform generalized large language models in specialized domains. For me, this degree is about leveling up by moving from simply using AI tools to truly understanding and developing them," said Arthur Kennedy, M.S. in Artificial Intelligence '26.

Why I Chose St. Thomas

Perry Abdulkadir, M.S. ’26, graduated with an undergraduate degree in Government from Harvard before building a career at the intersection of data science and responsible tech — spending years as an ML consultant auditing hundreds of machine learning models for algorithmic fairness and bias.

He chose to get a master's in Artificial Intelligence and a master's in Data Science from St. Thomas to close his work skills gap in generative AI, data engineering and pipeline architecture.

As Perry explains, “By the time I graduated in May 2026, I had already transitioned into a frontier AI safety science role at Microsoft, focusing on turning cutting-edge safety research into rigorous measurements and deployable mitigations. The [graduate] program didn't just fill the gaps — it accelerated everything."

Coursework and Degree Requirements

The M.S. in Artificial Intelligence requires 10 courses (30 credits). Students must maintain a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Course Delivery Mode

All programs in the Software Engineering and Data Science department at the University of St. Thomas are offered in CoFlex mode, i.e. the student has the flexibility to attend classes either in-person or online.

Inclusions and restrictions:
  • CoFlex course delivery mode is available to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and students on work visas.
  • International students or students receiving certain scholarship benefits are ineligible to take the online option and must attend classes in-person.

Dr. Manjeet Rege is an AI expert, professor, Chair of the Software Engineering and Data Science department, and Director for the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence at St. Thomas. He is also the co-host of the "All Things Data" podcast, interviewing data scientists, technologists, business experts and futurists which averages over 60,000 listeners.

Before joining the faculty at St. Thomas, Dr. Chih Lai was a principal software engineer, working on a collision avoidance system. Lai holds three U.S patents and three European patents. Lai also worked with Medtronic and has pending patents on monitoring and evaluating Parkinson patients.

Dr. Jim Howard is a machine learning practitioner with over 15 years of experience specializing in the development of machine learning models and deployment of those models to real production systems. He has previously worked for many Fortune 500 companies including 3M, Land O' Lakes, and Meta. He is currently a principal engineer of machine learning at Laurel.AI.
